Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
